“We Want to Quit: Supporting Cessation in African American Communities”

When it comes to race in Kansas, Non-Hispanic American Indian/Alaska Native have the highest smoking rates coming in at 35.1. The next highest racial demographic is the Non-Hispanic Black or African or African American population, which has a rate of 23.4%, nearly 7.6 higher than Non-Hispanic White people; this disparity isn’t accidental.

Recently the Center for Black Health & Equity and National Jewish Health released the, “We Want to Quit: Supporting Cessation in African American Communities” toolkit, also known as the 70% Guide. The 70% guides cessation treatment programs while also considering social determinants of health. It also challenges the overtly racist rhetoric that tobacco companies have promoted for decades.

Our staff is pleased that Local Health Equity Action Team has agreed to training from Tobacco Free Wichita staff! The training will allow community leaders to help increase awareness of health disparities and resources for members of the community who want to quit.
