Governor’s Budget Includes Increase on Cigarette Tax
Governor Brownback revealed a budget plan today (Friday) that includes an increase of more than $100 million in state taxes on liquor, cigarettes and tobacco product sales. He will seek to increase the tax on a pack of cigarettes from the current 79 cents to $2.29. The tax on tobacco products would grow from 10 percent of an item’s wholesale price to 25 percent of that price.
