Two Careless Smoking Fires in Wichita since July 14th
On July 14th, the KSN.com reported a fire at Raintree Apartments located on the west side of Wichita at 700 N. Silver Springs. Firefighters stated that a carelessly discarded cigarette from an upstairs apartment sparked the blaze and caused over $600,000 in damages including personal belongings of displaced residents. The American Red Cross is assisting residents that were affected by the fire.
On Saturday, July 26, around 7:30 a.m., another fire was reported at The Shores, a south side apartment complex located in the 2700 block of south Emporia. When firefighters arrived, they found flames on a deck that had spread to the third floor. The cause of the fire is believed to be a carelessly discarded cigarette. Crews were able to bring the fire under control, but 3 apartments are now uninhabitable. Damage is estimated at $100,000 to the apartments and their contents.
