Young New Yorkers who want to smoke will soon have to wait for their 21st birthdays before they can buy a pack of cigarettes after lawmakers voted overwhelmingly to raise the tobacco-purchasing age from 18 to 21. The City Council’s vote Wednesday makes New York one of only a few places throughout the United States that have tried to stymie smoking

The Smoke-Free Housing Initiative has been busy working on resources to help apartment managers adopt smoke-free policies in at least on of their residential buildings. Smoke-free policies will not only help increase revenue for the property by decreasing maintenance costs and risk of fire, but it will also help improve the overall health of tenants by decreasing their exposure to harmful secondhand smoke.
