What is the Great American Smokeout?GASO2013

Every year, on the third Thursday of November, smokers across the nation take part in the American Cancer Society Great American Smokeout. They may use the date to make a plan to quit, or plan in advance and then quit smoking that day. The event challenges people to stop using tobacco and helps people know about the many tools they can use to quit and stay quit.

This year, the Great American Smokeout is on November 21. To help support this day of quitters, Tobacco Free Wichita will run a social media campaign on both the website and Facebook each day during the week of the Novmember 17 – 23.

According the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 70% of smokers have a desire to quit. During the week of the Great American Smokeout, TFW members have the opportunity to promote helpful messages to people who might be considering quitting and are not sure what resources are available.

So when you are checking your Facebook page this week, instead of just scrolling down through the list of funny e-cards and motivational messages, hit “Share” and post our messages on your page or the page of someone who needs it!

Let’s get it started, TFW!
