World No Tobacco Day – May 31, 2013
According to a national survey conducted by Keep America Beautiful, cigarette butts are the #1 littered item in the United States. The filters are actually made from plastic which is “technically biodegradable”. However, this only occurs under extreme conditions, such as with cigarette butts that end up in sewage. Those found on streets and playgrounds do not biodegrade and become a hazard for accidental ingestion by children and pets, as well as a potentially toxic material that pollutes our rivers and streams.
This year, the Tobacco Free Wichita Coalition, Tobacco Free Kansas Coalition, and local youth will hold a “litter awareness event” to celebrate World No Tobacco Day this Friday, May 31, 2013.
Please join us near Exploration Place close to the Arkansas River from 2:00 to 2:30 p.m. on Friday to help stop this toxic pollution!
